Precision Detection. Superior Outcomes.

The adenoma detection rate (ADR) is one of the most important quality metrics for Colonoscopy. While the international minimum quality benchmark for ADR is 25%, Dr. Tiong consistently achieves a rate of over 50%.

This is achieved by consistently using evidence-based techniques to maximise detection, including:

  • Double examination of the right colon (with retroflexion).
  • Distal cap attachments to maximise views behind folds.
  • AI-assisted polyp detection software.
  • Meticulous inspection (minimum withdrawal time of 6 to 9 minutes).

Achieving a superior ADR minimises the risk of developing interval colorectal cancer, giving you the peace of mind you deserve.

Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer death in New Zealand, yet it is often highly preventable through early detection. Our screening services provide a proactive and rigorous approach for individuals with a significant family history, a positive FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) result, or those who have reached the age where regular surveillance is recommended. By identifying and addressing cellular changes before they become symptomatic, we provide the best opportunity for successful prevention and long-term peace of mind.

Advanced Therapeutic Polypectomy

A colonoscopy is more than just a diagnostic tool; it is a life-saving therapeutic intervention. During the procedure, Dr. Tiong utilizes high-definition imaging to identify and remove pre-cancerous polyps (adenomas) in real-time. By using advanced therapeutic techniques to perform a polypectomy, these growths are safely removed before they have the chance to develop into malignancy. This "find and fix" approach is a cornerstone of Jimmy’s practice, focusing on eliminating future cancer risk and avoiding the need for more invasive surgery later.

Diagnostic Symptom Investigation

For patients experiencing active gastrointestinal symptoms, a colonoscopy provides the definitive diagnostic clarity required to establish a clear path forward. We provide precise, high-level investigations for symptoms such as rectal bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or iron deficiency anaemia. By combining clinical expertise with AI-assisted detection technology, we can rule out serious pathology and identify the underlying cause of your symptoms, ensuring you receive a tailored management plan rooted in accurate data.

FAQ

  • Will I be awake?

You will usually be given conscious sedation, which relaxes you for the procedure, but doesn’t completely “knock you out” like a general anaesthesia. However, people often fall asleep during the earlier part of the procedure, and may not have memory of the procedure due to the sedative effects.

  • Is a colonoscopy painful?

Most people experience little to no discomfort thanks to sedation, and with meticulous endoscope insertion techniques. We also use carbon dioxide (instead of air) to gently distend the bowel, which is absorbed by the body much faster, significantly reducing post-procedural bloating and discomfort.

  • How often do I need a colonoscopy?

For people with an average risk of bowel cancer and a high-quality previous colonoscopy (with no polyps found), a repeat colonoscopy is generally recommended every 10 years. For those with a history of polyps or a significant family history of bowel cancer, the interval is typically shorter—ranging from 1 to 5 years, depending on your specific clinical risk profile.

  • Can I have a colonoscopy without sedation?

Yes, some people choose to have the procedure without sedation. However, most patients in New Zealand opt for sedation for comfort.

  • How long does it take to get results?

Your endoscopist can often discuss the visual findings on the same day. If biopsies or polyps are sent for laboratory analysis, results typically take a few days to a couple of weeks, which will be communicated to you when available.

  • What if I can’t complete the bowel preparation?

If you’re struggling to complete the preparation or are experiencing side effects, contact your healthcare team before the procedure for advice. An inadequately prepared bowel may mean the procedure needs to be postponed or repeated.
